Getbhavcopy: Free NSE and BSE data downloader

Blog Post New Entry

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.4 released

Posted by Hemen on May 2, 2009 at 11:39 PM

A new version of Getbhavcopy has been released to fix the following issues:

  • Till version 2.0.3 Getbhavcopy used to send a post to NSE to generate the CSV file for the index and then downloaded that csv file with index data. Recently I was noticing a lot of 404 Not Found errors being returned from NSE server randomly while downloading the NSE Indices data file.

Version 2.0.4 changes the approach in the way it downloads the Indices data. The indices data is downloaded from NSE itself but now does not depend on the CSV file, this way we will not notice the random 404 Not found errors

The following is the error I am talking about, notice the random 404 errors below. These are now fixed

Message    *********  Downloading Data for 22-04-2009  *********

  • The other issue fixed is with the NSE Indices volume calculation. This issue does not effect those who download  data every day. However if you are used to download bulk data (i.e. for a range of dates) in one shot then you would face this issue. The issue is that the NSE indices volume is incorrectly calculated and the volume keeps on adding for each day. Hence you will have a volume pattern as follows.

Notice how the volume keeps on rising till one day and then it drops. Those are the range of dates for which I downloaded data (i.e. start dates and end dates while downloading).

All other data is perfect just the indices volume is erroneous if downloading for more than one day. This issue is also fixed now.

My question was if there was way to download ONLY the BSE indices data - not the data for all BSE stocks AND indices.

And in any case it was addressed to Hemen No need to for you to poke your nose in with an irrelevant reply.

Hi Hemen
Is there a way to download ONLY the BSE indices data using GB?

1st- read the tutorial for using bhavcopy options
2nd- u have the option of downloading the data for either of exchanges or both in the options tab of bhavcopy, just make sure the right box is checked
regards

This was just happening for 10 july as NSE did not update indices data. NSE has fixed their site and now everything is back to normal.

@John: It gets a bit difficult to add the names since it is not present in the NSE bhavcopy files. Also there are some workarounds around this as you do not needs the name any time but once. I will blog soon about a tip that you can use to update the names for BSE scripts in one gao (where this issue is more prevalant as compared to NSE since NSE provides symbols which are easy to remember)

@nmm2007 : Please check the download section, you will get links to all the historical data.

Thanks Heman for this good utility.
Suggest you to add Full name to the format of download.
The format should be Ticker, Full Name, YYMMDD,Open, High, Low, Close, OI.
