Getbhavcopy: Free NSE and BSE data downloader

Blog Post New Entry

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.6 released

Posted by Hemen on October 13, 2009 at 9:27 AM

I know this has been pending for a long time from my end. Thanks to the Maharashtra Assembly elections and the holiday as a result of it, I got some well deserved time to work on this new release.

This version contains the following fixes:

1. BSE Indices data download fixed : Technically this was not a bug in Getbhavcopy, however the change at BSE end caused things to break in almost all free data downloaders available. I think Getbhavcopy is the first free NSE and BSE data downloader to provide the fix (not verified). The change at BSE end was that it suddenly changed the sort order of the indices data serach page from ascending to descending.

As a result whenever someone downloads historical BSE data (even two days back is historical), they see the same BSE data repeating for all the dates. This happens because Getbhavcopy will always get today's data for all these historial days from BSE (due to the change in sort order at BSE end). It was not an easy fix but finally after some days of work I was able to get it working. Those who use Getbhavcopy everyday to download the data will not face this issue (so try to be regular with your downloads )

Important :

The install instructions for version 2.0.6 are a bit different then all the previous releases. As usual copy the Getbhavcopy.exe and Getbhavcopy.exe.config from the zip file to the existing directory overwriting the existing files. However, this time you need to start Getbhavcopy, go to the Options tab and then set the BSE Indices data download order to 'Descending'. It is extremely important to save the options or else you will keep facing the same issue.

With that done..you are all set to use the new version. I have done a bit less testing this time (to provide a quicker release) so please let me know in case you notice any issues.

2. NIFTY MIDCAP 50 support added : This version will also download indices data for the new NSE index that was created recently.

Finally, the donations are drying up a bit. In case you do not want to do a bank transfer or pay by credit card using Paypal, you can also mail me the donation check by post. Please check the donation page to know the mailing address.

Thanks for all those you have donated till now and for the constant support.

Hi Hemen,

The latest version of GBC gives some problems. For one, it hangs and takes more time to download the data. Secondly, sometimes it is not downloading indices from NSE. Out of the data of the last ten days, i have had to update NSE indices manually, as the GBC download did not contain that data

Thanks for the update. I used GBC today after a gap of 2 weeks. Now BSE Indices are downloading in proper sequence and charting is just as before.

Thank you Mr Ramesh for solution. One request to Mr Kapadia. Give option of downloading indices only instead of all equities. Second, can something be done to send GBC directly to Amibroker sectorwise ? This is essential because Indian markets move as per sector. Regards.

Greetings from Baltimore, Maryland:

Dear Friends and Mr. Hemen Kapadia:

After struggling and scratching my brain for two days, I decided to D/L the .NET Framework 3.5 directly from the Microsoft Website. There was also a Service Pake (SP1) obn the site. The steps I took were as follows:

1. D/L 3.5 directly from the MSFT Web site (both the native and SP1 file)
2. Let the System install the files. After sabout 1 minute everything is installed and you get the confirmation of successful D/L.
3. There after, I followed the directions of creating the fol;ders and subfolders as per Mr. Kapadia's instructions.
4. Pleased to let all of you knoe that the GBC is "humming" very well.

I guess the trick is to D/L the 3.5 service pack.

Regards

Ramesh.
